The Weekend: Tucson Loves Ozzy, and the Ronstadt Name Rides Again
For three weeks the downtown big rooms have been running on patio power and mariachi Sundays. This weekend the warehouse district finally cranks the volume back up, and it does so in the most fitting way imaginable — by getting loud on purpose for the Prince of Darkness.
Saturday, July 25 — Tucson Loves Ozzy @ 191 Toole. A year on from Ozzy Osbourne's death, the all-ages warehouse hosts a full-throat tribute night, the kind of local-heavy bill 191 Toole was practically designed to sweat through. Expect the riffs you already know rendered by the people you already see around town. If there's a night to test whether that converted-warehouse PA can do justice to "War Pigs," it's this one. Bring earplugs; leave your dignity at the merch table.
If a monsoon metal Mass isn't your sacrament, the neighborhood circuit is stacked. Friday brings the P.J. Bidwell Band and the Eric Underwood Band to Monterey Court, Little House of Funk to the Hoppy Vine, and Conjunto Diferencia to the Outlaw. Saturday counters with a small embarrassment of riches: Mamma Coal's Sadie Hawkins Dance at La Rosa, Suerte at Union Public House, Flood the Runway at Monterey Court, and — the one to circle — the Ronstadt Company Store, carrying the most storied surname in Tucson music, playing Monterey Court on Sunday the 27th.
That last name is not a coincidence and not a gimmick. Linda Ronstadt is the most famous voice this city ever launched, and the Ronstadt family's Sonoran-borderlands musical roots run generations deep. When a Ronstadt-billed act plays a Tucson patio on a monsoon Sunday, it's less a concert than a hometown continuing to hum its own oldest tune.
So: one weekend, two moods. Saturday you scream along to Birmingham's darkest export in a room off the train tracks. Sunday you let a Ronstadt fold you back into the desert. Only in the Old Pueblo does that read as a coherent itinerary.
