Your Weekend, Wichita: Country at the Cotillion, Funk at WAVE, and a Free Park Show
Some weekends you have to hunt for a good show. This is not one of those weekends. Between Old Town, downtown, and the west-side ballroom, the run from Thursday to Sunday covers country, classic-rock covers, free-in-the-park, and a Sunday-night funk closer. Here's your map.
Thursday, Aug 13 — Braxton Keith at The Cotillion. The weekend opens on the floating maple. Rising country act Braxton Keith takes the Cotillion stage tonight, with doors at 7 and the show at 8. It's a fitting kickoff — a young country name in one of the best-sounding rooms in the state. If you've been meaning to catch a show at the Hall of Fame ballroom, a Thursday country bill is a low-stakes excuse.
Friday, Aug 14 — three ways to spend the night. First, the free option: the Audacy Summer Concert Series (the outfit longtime listeners still think of as KEYN) brings local favorites Lucky People to Naftzger Park, 601 E. Douglas, from 8 to 10 p.m., no cover. Bring a lawn chair, some cash for the food and drink trucks, and water — it's August. It's the easiest yes on the calendar.
Prefer a roof and a cover charge? Head to The Brickyard in Old Town, where Eclipse plays 70s-era rock and roll — big riffs, bigger choruses — with doors at 8 and music at 9. It's $10 cash or $12 card, and the patio is 21-plus.
And on the alt/indie end, Tommy Newport brings his Face to Face Tour to WAVE, doors at 7, show at 8, tickets around $20, all ages. The Wichita-connected songwriter's woozy, hook-forward pop is a sharp left turn from the Brickyard's classic-rock night — pick your lane.
Saturday, Aug 15 — Monterey Jack at The Brickyard. The Brickyard's self-proclaimed "cheesiest (and most popular) show in town" returns. Monterey Jack deals in party-rock anthems and crowd-singalong maximalism; doors at 8, music at 9, cover at the gate, 21-plus. If Friday's classic-rock set left you wanting more volume and fewer restraints, this is the Saturday for it.
Sunday, Aug 16 — Nik Parr & The Selfless Lovers at WAVE. Close the weekend with a sweat. Nik Parr & The Selfless Lovers bring high-energy funk to WAVE, doors at 7, show at 8, around $20, all ages. It's the kind of horn-forward, keep-moving set that turns a school-night Sunday into a small act of rebellion — the perfect antidote to the Monday looming behind it.
Why lay it all out like this? Because Wichita's live scene works best when the whole grid is lit — when a free park show and a $20 club gig and a country night at a 65-year-old ballroom all happen inside four days, and the only real problem is choosing. A city with this many good rooms and this many working bands doesn't need a marquee festival to prove it has a music scene. It just needs you to show up on a random August weekend.
So here's the assignment: pick two. Do the free park show and the funk closer. Or the country opener and the cheese-rock Saturday. Mix genres, cross neighborhoods, tip the bands and the food trucks. The calendar did its part. The rest is on you.
