Fireworks, Free Bands, and the Best Deal on the Coast: Boardwalk Blast Is Back
Here is the math on the cheapest great night in the Cape Fear this week: zero dollars for the band, zero dollars for the fireworks, and whatever you decide to spend on funnel cake. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk Blast — the free Thursday concert-and-pyrotechnics series that is, quietly, the most-attended live music in the county — runs again tonight, and it does not slow down until Labor Day weekend.
The format is simple and it is perfect. Bands play the Boardwalk Gazebo Stage from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., the fireworks go up promptly at 9, and the Atlantic handles the reverb. Tonight it's The Cruise Brothers, working the kind of sun-warmed, sing-along cover set built for a crowd that's equal parts sunburned families, off-shift servers, and teenagers pretending they're not on a date.
Don't let "free" fool you into thinking it's an afterthought. This is a real season with a real spine: Resoul takes the gazebo next Thursday, July 16; Port City Shakedown follows July 23; and the schedule rolls on through Machine Gun Band (July 30), OC3ANS (Aug. 6), and The Main Event (Aug. 13) before the series closes out in September. The organizers keep it on Thursdays all summer — the one exception being the Fourth of July weekend, when the whole beach is already a party.
What makes the Blast worth writing about, and not just listing, is what it is: a public commons. Wilmington's summer has gotten expensive. The amphitheaters downtown book six-figure tours and charge accordingly, and there's nothing wrong with that — a city this size having a 7,200-seat riverfront shed is a genuine luxury. But a beach town also needs the other thing: music you can walk up to with nothing in your pockets, on a boardwalk your grandparents walked, under fireworks paid for by somebody else. The Blast is that thing. It's civic infrastructure disguised as a good time.
A few tactical notes, because we care about your evening. Parking at Carolina Beach in July is a contact sport; come early, or better, come by bike or the free trolley and skip the circling entirely. Stake your chair-and-blanket real estate on the sand within sightline of both the gazebo and the sky — you want the band and the fireworks in the same frame. And eat before the crowd hits the boardwalk stands at 8, unless waiting twenty minutes for a corn dog is your idea of a vacation.
The bands on this series aren't chasing a record deal. They're the working regional acts that keep the Cape Fear's summer humming — the wedding-and-festival circuit that plays clean, plays loud, and reads a beach crowd better than any headliner ever could. On any given Thursday one of them will drop into a song you forgot you loved, three hundred strangers will sing the chorus, and the first mortar will crack open the sky right on the downbeat.
You can spend a lot of money in this town this summer. Tonight, you don't have to. Chair, sand, sunset, a band that knows the assignment, and fireworks at 9. Somewhere a promoter is charging ninety dollars for less. Bring the kids.
