The Best Weekend of the Summer: A Boardwalk, Three Listening-Room Nights, and Robert Earl Keen by the Lake
If you only pick one weekend of the Cape Fear summer to go all in, make it this one. Between tonight and Sunday, Wilmington offers up a near-perfect cross-section of everything it does well — free fireworks on the sand, a quiet songwriter run downtown, an arena-sized tribute act, a Nashville star in a burger yard, and, to close it out, one of the great living Texas songwriters under the cypress trees. Here's the plan.
Thursday (tonight). Start free. The Main Event takes the Carolina Beach Boardwalk gazebo for the weekly Boardwalk Blast, music from 6:30 to 9:30 and fireworks at 9 sharp over the Atlantic. It's the same reliable, no-cover formula that's carried the region's summer since May, and it's still the best deal on the coast.
Friday & Saturday. Two tracks, pick your volume. For the big-room spectacle, the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College hosts Brit Floyd — the globe-trotting Pink Floyd tribute, all lasers and Dark Side devotion — on Aug. 13 and 14. For the opposite experience, Live at Ted's runs its songwriter weekend: Shannon Baker & Sometime Soon on Friday, and Piedmont-blues duo Jon Shain & FJ Ventre on Saturday. And keep an eye on Bowstring Burgers & Brewyard, quietly stacking a weekend of its own with Penelope Road (Aug. 13), Charleston indie favorites Easy Honey (Aug. 14), and — the curveball — Charles Esten (Aug. 15), the "Nashville" actor and country hitmaker turning a burger yard into a honky-tonk.
Saturday, the marquee. If arena-scale is your speed, the Wilson Center brings LeAnn Rimes on Aug. 15 — the voice that's been a star since she was a teenager, in a room built for it.
Sunday, the finale. Save your best evening for the lake. Robert Earl Keen plays Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., part of his "Then and Now" run — and there is not a better place in this city to hear him. Keen is the Texas songwriter's songwriter, the man who wrote "The Road Goes On Forever" and turned "Merry Christmas from the Family" into a national tradition, and Greenfield Lake — small, tree-ringed, humid with cypress and history — is the kind of room his songs were built for. A big-shed booking would flatten him. This one won't. (Meanwhile, downtown, Ted's closes its own weekend Sunday with the already-sold-out Dylan-and-Cash tribute — the whole town, apparently, in a listening mood.)
That's the weekend: free on Thursday, intimate on Friday and Saturday, enormous if you want it, and a genuine legend by the lake on Sunday. Beach town, film town, port town — this is the weekend Wilmington gets to be a music town, top to bottom, from a boardwalk gazebo to a restored lakeside bowl. Pick your nights. Pick your volume. The road, as the man himself will remind you Sunday, goes on forever — but this weekend doesn't. Go.
