One More Thursday: Lena & The Bear and Genevieve Close Out the July–August Run
The summer's next-to-last Downtown Summer Nights lands Thursday, Aug. 13, and it's a gentler, more atmospheric bill than the horns-up party of a few weeks back: Lena & The Bear headline North Front Street with Genevieve opening. If July's shows were about momentum, this one's about a warm August dusk and a band that rewards actually listening.
The format is by now familiar and still unbeaten: cash-only beer garden at 5:30 p.m., opener 6 to 7, headliner 7 to 9, all-ages, free, downtown. With school-start creeping up on Yakima County families, an early-evening all-ages show that wraps by 9 is close to a perfect August outing.
Lena & The Bear bring the kind of rootsy, songwriting-forward sound that suits the back half of summer, when everybody's a little sun-tired and ready to sway rather than mosh. Genevieve opens. It's a bill built for the golden hour, and Front Street at that time of evening — string lights, food-truck smoke, the day's heat finally breaking — is one of the more quietly lovely settings the Valley offers.
If you want to make a week of it, the Valley cooperates. James Beam plays Single Hill Brewing's Single Hill Sessions the very next night, Aug. 14, and out in Zillah, VanArnam Vineyards' Sounds of Summer series runs its own August dates. But Aug. 13 on Front Street is the anchor: it's the second-to-last night of a series that fought to exist this year, and the crowd size is a direct message to the organizers about what next summer should look like.
Why it matters: the last shows of a season are a referendum. A packed Aug. 13 tells the Downtown Association that six nights was the right call and maybe seven is next; a thin one invites another round of belt-tightening. Turnout is the only feedback form that matters, and it's free to fill out.
There's one more Thursday after this — Aug. 27, with James Beam and the Talbott Brothers — but don't save it all for the finale. Show up Aug. 13, sway a little, and keep Yakima's best free tradition worth repeating.
