Crockett, Jimmy Eat World, and Leftover Salmon: A Wildly Unbalanced Great Weekend (Jul 15–17)
If you want proof that Bend's booking has no genre discipline whatsoever — and thank god for that — look at the next three days, which swing from red-dirt country to emo to Colorado newgrass without apology.
Wednesday, Jul 15, warms things up with Sam Barber, the young Missouri singer whose raw-throated Americana blew up faster than anyone planned, at Hayden Homes Amphitheater. The same night, downtown, ska survivors Warsaw Poland Bros. land in Bend on what The Source's Richard Sitts calls "the band's first Oregon tour in more than a decade" — a nice reminder that the small rooms are running while the big lawn fills.
Thursday, Jul 16, is the fulcrum of the week. In Drake Park, Munch & Music brings Leftover Salmon, the Boulder jamgrass institution that helped invent the whole "slamgrass" idea, with Kota Dosa opening — free, 5:30 start, river behind the stage. Meanwhile at the amphitheater, Charley Crockett, the impossibly prolific Texas troubadour, headlines with Margo Price — a country double-bill sturdy enough to headline a festival on its own. You genuinely have to choose, and there is no wrong answer; one costs nothing and one is worth every dollar.
Friday, Jul 17, the amphitheater goes full 2001-yearbook with Jimmy Eat World, whose "The Middle" remains scientifically impossible to not shout along to, plus Motion City Soundtrack and Illuminati Hotties — a stacked bill that turns a folk-country town into a pop-punk sing-along for one glorious night.
Why it matters: this is the week that shows off the machine. A brewery-scaled ska show, a free river-park jamgrass set, a marquee country double-header, and an emo-nostalgia blowout — four crowds that barely overlap, all fed inside 48 hours. That's not an accident of the calendar; it's what a healthy small-market scene looks like when the venues aren't fighting over the same audience.
Strategy for the week: Thursday is the crux. If you've got kids or a tight wallet, Munch wins — bring a blanket and get there before six. If you've been waiting all year for Crockett, buy now and eat before you go. And whatever you pick, keep Friday open for the sugar-rush of Jimmy Eat World. Some weekends you pace yourself. This one you don't.
