The Ghost of Jerry Garcia Haunts Silver Moon — And He's Welcome Here

There is no more Bend way to honor a dead guitar hero than to do it downtown, at a brewery, with a house band and a room full of tie-dye that has clearly survived multiple decades of laundering. On Wednesday, Jul 22, Silver Moon Brewing (24 NW Greenwood Ave.) throws a Jerry Garcia Band Night, part of a wave of Central Oregon tributes clustered around what would have been Garcia's Aug 1 birthday.

The pitch is simple and correct. As The Source put it this month, "the legacy of Jerry Garcia's 30-year music career is still going strong more than 30 years after his death" — and nowhere does that legacy find a more natural habitat than a mountain-town taproom where the beer is local, the jams are long, and nobody checks their watch. This isn't a Dead cover set aiming for note-perfect reproduction; the Jerry Garcia Band was Garcia's looser, soul-and-gospel-tinged side project, which means the night is built for stretching out.

Silver Moon deserves the spotlight beyond one show. Over the past few years the Greenwood Avenue brewery has become one of downtown Bend's most dependable stages — a genuinely small room that books like a bigger one, threading bluegrass, country, metal benefit shows and touring indie through the same back space where, on an off night, you're just there for the beer. Look ahead a few weeks and Silver Moon has Goth Babe — the outdoors-obsessed, Pacific-Northwest-coded indie-electronic project of Griff Washburn — booked for Saturday, Aug 15, followed by Kentucky roots-rockers Magnolia Boulevard on Sunday, Aug 16. For a room this size to land a name like Goth Babe is exactly the kind of overachievement that defines Bend booking.

Why it matters: the big lawn down in the Old Mill gets the headlines, but rooms like Silver Moon are where a scene actually lives day-to-day — where a Wednesday-night Garcia tribute can draw a crowd on a work night, where local players get paid, and where the beer money quietly subsidizes the culture. The amphitheater is the summer's fireworks. This is the pilot light.

Get there early Wednesday. Garcia nights run long and the good spots near the stage go to the faithful who showed up before the first tuning note. Wear the shirt. You've earned it.
