Two Nights of Widespread Panic and a Wailer in the Park: Your Jul 9–12 Weekend

Some weekends the calendar clears its throat. This is one of them. Between Thursday's free show in Drake Park and a two-night jam-band siege at the amphitheater, Bend spends four days doing the thing it does best — turning a mountain town into a festival without anyone officially declaring one.

Start Thursday, Jul 9, in Drake Park, where Munch & Music rolls out its second week of the summer with The Original Wailers, the band carrying Bob Marley's actual catalog and, in guitarist Al Anderson, an actual alumnus of Marley's group. Openers Sun Dive warm the riverbank. It's free, it starts at 5:30 on the Stilson Builders stage, and it is the single best-value ticket in Central Oregon precisely because it isn't one.

Then the amphitheater takes over. Widespread Panic plays Hayden Homes Amphitheater on both Friday, Jul 10 and Saturday, Jul 11 — a two-night stand, which is how you know the band and the room are serious about each other. Panic is a two-set, no-repeats operation; the Southern jam institution rewards the people who buy both nights and punishes anyone hoping to hear the same show twice. Pack a layer. The high desert forgets it was 90 degrees the second the sun drops behind the Cascades.

Sunday, Jul 12, the same lawn pivots hard from patchouli to flannel with The Head and The Heart, the Seattle folk-rock band whose big harmonies and stomp-along choruses are practically engineered for an outdoor Northwest crowd, with Michael Marcagi — the "Scared to Start" songwriter having a genuine moment — opening. It's a homecoming of sorts; a Cascadia band playing to a Cascadia crowd as the light goes long.

Why it matters: this is the weekend the summer season stops being a lineup poster and becomes a lived-in thing. Three very different rooms-worth of music — free folk-reggae in a public park, a jam-band marathon, and arena-folk catharsis — inside 72 hours and four miles. If you only leave the house once this weekend, make it Thursday; if you leave twice, make the second one Panic.

Buy amphitheater tickets early. These lawn shows have a way of tightening up the week of, and the last thing you want on a Cascade-lit Saturday is to be the person refreshing the resale page in the parking lot.
