Home Free brings the harmonies to a 112-year-old room built to hold them

On Saturday, July 18, the country a-cappella group Home Free plays Belle Mehus Auditorium, doors and downbeat at 7 p.m. It's the kind of booking a room like the Belle was made for: five voices, no band, and an old hall whose whole point is that it carries sound honestly.

Home Free is a known quantity — an all-vocal country act with a real touring machine and a fanbase that spans church-choir grandmothers and beatbox-curious teenagers. What makes this stop worth writing up isn't novelty; it's the pairing. Put an unamplified-at-heart vocal group in an arena and you fight the barn all night. Put them in the Belle Mehus, a 1,000-ish-seat 1914 auditorium designed by North Dakota architect Arthur Van Horn and renovated to the tune of $2.5 million in 1996, and the building does half the work for you.

The Belle earns a paragraph of its own. It opened January 19, 1914, on North 6th Street, cost about $35,000, and served as the cultural centerpiece of early Bismarck-Mandan before "cultural centerpiece" was a phrase anybody used. It landed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and took its current name in 1989, honoring a longtime local music teacher — which is a very Bismarck way to name a landmark: not after a donor or a general, but after the woman who taught the town to sing. Just north of it stands the World War Memorial Building, dedicated in 1931, part of the same civic block of stone and memory.

Here's the scene angle. A city keeps a historic auditorium two ways — with money and with bookings. The money part is settled; the Belle has been restored and is run under the Bismarck Event Center umbrella. The bookings part is the ongoing test, and a touring night like Home Free is exactly the kind of date that justifies keeping the lights on and the marquee lit. Every national act that chooses the Belle over a blander modern room is a small vote for the idea that old buildings are worth the trouble.

If you go, go early and look up. The Belle is a room to be in, not just a place to watch a thing happen. The acoustics were engineered before amplification was a crutch, and a vocal group is the truest test of that design you'll get all year — no guitars to hide behind, no drums to blame.
