Shawn Hess Has Been Laramie's Quiet Constant for 15 Years. This Summer, a State Park Circuit Put Him on Trail.
If you've spent any time in a Laramie bar with a corner stage over the last decade and a half, you've probably heard Shawn Hess without knowing to write the name down. He's a staple of western and folk music in Wyoming — born and raised in Cheyenne, a Laramie resident for the last 15 years, and a working musician who tours often enough that "local" undersells him.
This year he got a bit of statewide daylight. Hess is one of four Wyoming-based acts selected for the 2026 Tunes on the Trail program, the Wyoming State Parks series that pairs a guided hike with a live acoustic set in a scenic park — joining Box of Rocks (also Laramie), The Tinderwoods (Lander) and Pathfinder (Casper). Hess drew the series opener: June 6 at Guernsey State Park, where an optional 1.25-mile hike up the historic Civilian Conservation Corps Red Cliff Trail led into a 90-minute performance surrounded by sandstone and sky.
It's a fitting gig for him. Hess writes the kind of plainspoken western folk that doesn't need a light show — songs built to carry across open ground, which is more or less the premise of an outdoor state-park series. Tunes on the Trail is a small program with an outsized instinct: get people off the couch, onto a trail, and in front of a Wyoming songwriter they might otherwise never book a ticket to see. For an artist like Hess, whose whole career is about showing up and playing the room, a state-sanctioned tour of the state's prettiest rooms is close to a perfect fit.
The bigger point is what a career like his says about a market this size. Cheyenne and Laramie can't sustain a deep bench of full-time touring musicians; the ones who last are the ones who tour out, keep costs low, and treat every VFW hall and brewery patio as a legitimate stage. Hess has done exactly that for 15 years, which is why a program built to spotlight Wyoming's working musicians landed on him. He didn't blow up. He stuck around. In a scene this thin, sticking around is its own kind of stardom.
Why it matters: a healthy local scene needs headliners and lifers, and the lifers rarely get the write-up. Hess is the connective tissue — the guy who'll open for the touring act, anchor the brewery Saturday, and turn up on a state-park trailhead in June because that's where the work is.
Catch him where you can, and tip like the venue depends on it — because for artists at this level, it does.
