Maddy Walsh & The Blind Spots Are the Home Team, and GrassRoots Proved It Again

Every real scene needs a home team — a band that isn't passing through on a tour routing, that will still be here in November when the amphitheater is dark and the vineyard stage is under a tarp. In the Finger Lakes, that band is Maddy Walsh & The Blind Spots, the Ithaca five-piece fronted by a songwriter with one of the biggest voices in upstate New York, and they spent the last weekend of July doing what they do best: representing.

Fresh off the region's marquee event, the Blind Spots turned up among the local acts on the 2026 Finger Lakes GrassRoots lineup, July 16–19 in Trumansburg — and by NYS Music's festival recap, they "proudly represented the Finger Lakes music scene" on a bill topped by Rhiannon Giddens and Taj Mahal. Sharing a fairground with international headliners is exactly the stress test a homegrown band wants, and by every account the Blind Spots held the stage.

The band, steered by "magnetic songstress and force of nature" Maddy Walsh — the description is from their own press kit, and it's not wrong — trades in what they've called moxy rock: big, soaring vocals, four-part harmonies, inventive electric guitar, and a rhythm section tight enough to headline a room like the Hangar Theatre, which they've done. They have a catalog several albums deep and a reputation as one of the hardest-working live acts in the region, the kind of band that plays cideries, festivals, and theaters with the same commitment.

Why devote a feature to a band that didn't headline anything this week? Because the health of a music market isn't measured by the touring acts it imports; it's measured by the local acts it can sustain. A region can rent Luke Bryan for a night. It cannot rent a home team. The Blind Spots — and Ithaca peers like the hip-hop collective Gunpoets — are the connective tissue that turns a string of venues into an actual scene, the bands that fill the Tuesdays and the between-weekends and give touring headliners a reason to think the Finger Lakes audience is real.

Catch them at a cidery or a theater this fall, when the tourists thin out and the home team plays for the people who never left.
