Scene Report: Fort Worth's Summer Songs Are Loose, Sunny and Refreshingly Unbothered
Ask a national playlist what a Fort Worth summer sounds like and you'll get algorithmic mush. Ask the local writers actually living through July here and you get something better: slacker guitars, big waves in the lyrics even though the nearest ocean is a six-hour drive, and a general refusal to try too hard. Public-radio tastemakers at KXT gathered a batch of new North Texas songs into a "Summer anthems" roundup this month, and a couple of Fort Worth-tied names jumped out as worth your queue.
Start with Lost in the Wash and their track "Quilt," pulled from a new four-song EP titled Moose. KXT clocked it as "a breezy track" with "a slacker-rock style that feels like a lazy Summer day," which is about the most Fort Worth-in-July description imaginable — music built for a porch, a box fan and a cooler you don't want to get up from. Slacker-rock is a hard trick to pull off honestly; lean too far and it's just underwritten, but done right it sounds like exactly this, a band relaxed enough to let the songs breathe. A four-track EP is also a smart shape for the moment — long enough to state a sound, short enough that you'll actually play the whole thing twice.
Then there's Lorena Leigh, whose "Comeback Kid (full send)" KXT described as transporting listeners "to a sunny beach with big waves, filled with a fearless desire to jump into anything life throws at you." That's a lot of forward motion for a summer single, and it fits the season's mood: less introspection, more send-it.
Why round these up in a venue-and-shows archive? Because the recorded side and the live side of a scene are the same organism. The writers filling The Post and Tulips on any given night are, in the daytime, the people quietly uploading four-song EPs and chasing a spot on a regional playlist. A healthy music town shows up in both places at once — bodies in the rooms and new files in the feed — and Fort Worth this July is doing both. Earlier in the month, Southside instrumentalist Dave Cave dropped his Summer Suite 2 EP and threw a July 4 release show; now the summer-singles crop is landing right behind it. That's not a coincidence, that's a season.
The through-line across all of it is temperament. Nobody in this batch is trying to sound like a coastal export or chasing a trend cycle. The Fort Worth summer sound, at least this year, is confident enough to be casual — slacker guitars, beach imagery deployed with a wink, a fearless "full send" energy that doesn't take itself too seriously. Pull up the KXT list, drop "Quilt" and "Comeback Kid (full send)" into whatever you throw on the aux this weekend, and then go find these names on a local bill — because the whole point of a scene report is that the report and the show are supposed to meet. In Fort Worth this summer, they keep doing exactly that.
