Kellie Parr Has Been the Golden Isles' Songwriter-in-Residence for Thirty Years. She's Not Done.
If you have spent a summer on St. Simons, you have almost certainly heard Kellie Parr — solo with a Gretsch hollow-body, or fronting her band, working a room from Fernandina Beach up to Tybee. What you may not know is that the singer-songwriter-guitarist has been quietly assembling one of the longest and most interesting résumés in coastal Georgia music, and she is still adding to it.
The arc is worth laying out, because it explains the confidence. A St. Simons native, Parr started young — playing guitar and harmonizing to Hank Williams Sr. with her mother at 12 — then left to earn an MBA at Florida State, where she fronted a grunge-era alt-rock band called Shatterposts that toured the Southeast and got real college-radio traction. Back home, she partnered with the late local singer-songwriter Tim Hayes; their duo HaynesParr played the storied Eddie's Attic in Atlanta and cut a 2001 album, "New World," recorded in Nashville and produced by Neil Young band member Ben Keith. In 2012 she launched her own label and production company, PeaceFish Productions, and has released solo records under its banner since.
Her current vehicle is Kellie Parr & Her SideCars, the vintage-country-rock-and-rockabilly trio she formed in 2022 with a rotating cast of the island's best — a band that mixes her originals with covers and, by her own description, is built to put on a show rather than provide background. "You really can't beat the energy of a full band show," she told Coastal Illustrated in a 2024 scene feature — a sentiment that reads as a mission statement.
The reason to feature Parr in the middle of a tourist-season summer is precisely that she is not a tourist-season act. In a market where a lot of the music is professional wallpaper — pleasant, competent, forgettable — Parr is a genuine songwriter with a catalog, a label, and a Sirius/XM Outlaw Country spin or three to her name. She is proof that you can build a real artistic life here without leaving for Nashville or Atlanta, and that the Golden Isles can be a home base rather than a place you escape.
