Free Fireworks, Two Shows a Night, and a Man in a Parrot Hat: Your HarbourFest Week

Here is the deal that Hilton Head keeps offering and visitors keep under-appreciating: free live music, five nights a week, all summer, on a working harbour, with fireworks thrown in. That's HarbourFest at Shelter Cove, and next week is a clean shot to do it right.

The schedule is a metronome. Free live entertainment runs Monday through Friday with fan-favorite children's entertainer Shannon Tanner playing two sets a night, 6:30 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 brings the week's fireworks — the shows go up over Broad Creek as soon as the sky is fully dark, part of a Tuesday run that continues July 21 and 28. Thursday is Parrot Palooza, when Tanner and his island band The Oyster Reefers take the stage around 7 p.m. and lean all the way into the Jimmy-Buffett-for-eight-year-olds bit. Cappy the Clown handles balloon animals and face paint. This is not a jazz-club evening. It is gloriously, unapologetically a family carnival on the water.

A tip from people who live here: get to Shelter Cove early, eat at one of the harbour restaurants (most run their own happy hours and live music alongside the festival), and let the kids burn out on carnival games before the fireworks. Parking fills; the marina has run a free shuttle in past summers for the big nights.

Why give a family-entertainment residency this much ink in a music blog? Because HarbourFest is celebrating its 37th year in 2026, and 37 years of anything on a fickle resort island is a genuine feat. Shannon Tanner has essentially raised two generations of vacationing kids from that stage. Beneath the spinning hats, this is one of the most durable live-music institutions in the entire Lowcountry — it just happens to be aimed at people under ten. Respect the longevity even if you age out of the setlist.
