Sunday at the Jazz Corner Is the Most Reliable Great Night in the Lowcountry

Every Sunday, in a shopping-village supper club on Hilton Head, the same thing happens, and it is very good. Tonight — Sunday, July 12 — Deas Guyz take the Jazz Corner stage, as they do essentially every Sunday, and if you want a single evening that explains why this club has survived twenty-six years, this is it.

Deas Guyz are led by vocalist Reggie Deas, with keyboardist Martin Lesch — who's held the piano chair for some sixteen years — anchoring a band that slides between jazz, soul, R&B, and the Gullah-inflected feel that's native to this coast. It is not a listening-room-hush situation and it isn't meant to be. It's supper-club music in the best sense: tight, warm, conversational, the kind of set that rewards a table of regulars and a first-timer at the bar equally.

The room around them matters. The Jazz Corner opened in 1999 in the Village at Wexford and built a reputation — heavily marketed, and mostly earned — as one of the country's serious jazz destinations. Across the week the stage rotates through Lesch's own "Journey Through Jazz" band, the Bobby Ryder Quartet, and touring acts, but the Sunday residency is the heartbeat, the night the locals claim.

Practical notes: this is a reservations room with a full dinner menu, so book a table rather than treating it like a walk-up bar. Come hungry, come early, and understand that the cover and the entrée are both part of the deal — this is how a real jazz club funds itself in a town that could just as easily fill the room with a karaoke machine.

Why it matters: the health of a scene isn't measured by its festivals. It's measured by whether there's a great show on a random Sunday in July, when nothing special is supposed to be happening. Hilton Head passes that test every week, and the Jazz Corner is the reason.
