Long Weekend, Full County: Arts Alive, Psych-Soul at Humbrews, and a Casino Rock Show

The calendar flips to August and the North Coast does the thing it does best in summer: too much at once, spread over too many towns. Here's the triage for the stretch from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7.

Saturday, Aug. 1 — Arts Alive, Old Town Eureka, 6–9 p.m. The monthly first-Saturday art walk turns the waterfront grid into a free, roaming crawl: galleries and museums stay open late, bars and restaurants pull in live players, and the whole thing is stroll-at-your-own-pace. It's the best cheap night out on the coast, and the surest way to stumble into music you weren't looking for.

Monday, Aug. 3 — Monophonics at Humboldt Brews. The Bay Area's premier psychedelic-soul band brings its heavy, cinematic, horns-and-Hammond sound to Arcata, with Crunk Funk opening. Listings put the show around 8 p.m., roughly $25 advance and $30 at the door, 21+. A Monday, sure, but Monophonics are the kind of band worth a slow Tuesday for. Full-tilt vintage soul in a room built to hold heat.

Friday, Aug. 7 — Be Brave Bold Robot at the Sapphire Palace, Blue Lake Casino. The county's mid-size ticketed room hosts the Bay Area act for a rock night, listed at 8 p.m. The Sapphire Palace is where you go when you want a real stage, a real sound system and a seat, which after a Monday at Humbrews may be exactly the reset you need.

Why bundle a college-town art walk, a soul show and a casino rock gig into one preview? Because that spread is the North Coast — three towns, three totally different rooms, one weekend, and a scene that only looks small until you try to see all of it. You can't. Pick two.

Cash for the Arts Alive food carts, advance tickets for Humbrews, and a designated driver for the Blue Lake run. That's the whole plan.
