Nigella Mahal's "Murmurations" Gets a Homecoming in the Carlo Theatre
Some records need a big room and a bigger PA. "Murmurations," the new album from North Coast singer-songwriter Nigella Mahal, needed the opposite: 116 seats, close walls and a hush. It got them Monday, July 20, when Mahal played the album-release show inside Dell'Arte's Carlo Theatre in Blue Lake, joined by Siena Nelson and Katie Belknap, as part of the Humboldt Folklife Festival.
A murmuration is that thing starlings do — thousands of birds turning as one body, no leader, no collision. As an album title it's a tell. The record, by its own release billing, is aimed at "everyone who's ever fallen in and out of love," and the songs move like the birds it's named for: individually small, collectively overwhelming, always about to change direction.
Playing a release show inside a folk festival is a canny bit of scene-craft. Instead of renting a room and hoping a crowd shows, Mahal launched the record into a week when the county's most attentive acoustic-music listeners were already gathered a few feet away. The Carlo — a physical-theatre space first, a music room second — is unforgiving in the best way: no bar chatter to hide behind, every breath audible. It's where you play a record you actually believe in.
That's the larger point worth making. Small scenes are often described as places artists leave. The healthier read is that they're places artists build — where a songwriter can workshop a record over a couple of years of Logger Bar sets and farmstand solo gigs, then debut it in front of the exact people who watched it grow. "Murmurations" didn't arrive from nowhere. It arrived from about a fifteen-minute drive from where it premiered.
