Free, Under the Stars, and 102 Years Deep: The Redlands Bowl Opens Its Summer
Here is the best deal in Southern California live music, and it costs exactly nothing. The Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival — running June 19 through August 14 this year — is deep into its season, and if you haven't yet claimed a patch of grass in Smiley Park with a picnic and a low-backed chair, this is your weekend to fix that.
Tonight, Friday July 10, the Bowl hosts Leyenda Folklorico, a program of Mexican folklórico dance and music that leans into exactly the cultural roots the IE wears proudly. It follows Tuesday's a cappella showcase from The Filharmonics (July 7), and it sets up a stacked back half: the Sweet Caroline Tour starring Jay White does the full Neil Diamond July 14, the string ensemble The Hutchins Consort plays July 17, and then the Bowl goes full Broadway with a staged Disney's Frozen run July 23–26.
What makes the Bowl worth a whole article is the model. Since 1924, this has been an admission-free festival — one of the longest continuously running free music festivals in the United States.
