One Night, Two Inland Empires: Glenn Miller vs. the Circle Pit, Aug 14
Friday, August 14, 2026 is the perfect Inland Empire evening because it forces a choice that only the IE could offer. On one stage: a beloved civic institution closing out its 102nd summer with fireworks and a symphony. On another, twenty-some miles west: five punk bands with names unprintable in a family newspaper. Same night. Same region. Completely different planets. Here's your guide to picking a side — or, if you're ambitious, doing both.
Option A: Redlands Bowl, Fireworks Finale. The Bowl's free summer season ends August 14 with its traditional Fireworks Finale, featuring the Redlands Symphony Orchestra conducted by Deanna Tham, with violinist Miclen LaiPang as soloist. It caps a week that also includes The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra on August 11 — big-band swing under the stars, no ticket required, exactly as it's been done since 1924. Bring blankets, low-backed chairs, and a picnic; get there early, because the finale draws the season's biggest lawn. Tip the bucket that keeps the whole thing free.
Option B: Riverside Municipal Auditorium, the loud one. Also August 14, the Muni hosts Hong Kong Fuck You, Scalp, Knuckle Sandwich, Nightmare Visions, and Buff — a hardcore/grind bill inside a 1929 Spanish Revival landmark. If your idea of a fireworks finale involves feedback and a circle pit under historic plasterwork, this is your night.
And if you split the difference geographically, the whole window has options: the Fox Performing Arts Center runs a Little Shop of Horrors 40th-anniversary screening August 14 and Los Yónics Zamacona August 15, while the Muni follows its punk night with The Hayds on August 15.
Why it matters: this is the pitch for the entire region in a single date. The coast makes you choose a scene and commit to it. The IE hands you a symphony and a grind set on the same Friday and dares you to say this place doesn't have range. It has range. It has fireworks. It has a band literally named to make your grandmother wince.
Kicker: Bernstein's ghost on one lawn, a circle pit on the other. Only in the 909/951 is that a scheduling conflict.
