Free, Loud, and on the Grass: Concerts on the Commons Hits Its Stride

If you have kids, a dog, a cooler, or a strong aversion to cover charges, clear your Sunday. Concerts on the Commons — the free weekly series at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village — is up and running for summer 2026, and the next few Sundays make a strong case that the best live music in the valley this month costs exactly nothing.

The series runs July 3 through August 16, presented by the Teton Village Association with the resort and partners, with free shows every Sunday plus a couple of bonus Independence Day dates to kick things off. This Sunday, July 12, the bill pairs Texas punk-country howlers Rattlesnake Milk with Humboldt soul outfit Object Heavy — a genuinely odd, genuinely fun double feature that tells you the bookers are not just phoning in a summer of jam bands.

Look a little further and the lineup gets even better. Old 97's, the Dallas alt-country lifers who basically wrote the template for the genre, headline July 26 with opener River Shook. Later in the window, funk-leaning jam favorites Boot Juice take August 9, and the series closes August 16 with reggae institution Third World alongside Kumar Fyah and Jackson's own Chanman Roots Band. Food and drink are scattered across the village — Mangy Moose, Osteria, the Tram Dock, and more — so you can build a whole afternoon around it.

Here is what a free series like this actually does for a scene. It lowers the door — literally to zero — so the audience that shows up is the whole community, not just the people who can drop sixty bucks on a Tuesday. Seasonal workers, second-homeowners, families who could never justify a ticket, touring bands testing new markets: they all end up on the same lawn. That mix is rare, and it is exactly the thing a resort economy usually prices out.

It also spreads the wealth to acts that don't fit the cowboy-bar or classical boxes. Reggae, Humboldt soul, Texas punk-country — none of that has an obvious home in Jackson the other 51 weeks a year. On the Commons, it gets a stage and a crowd.

Bring a blanket, get there early for a patch of shade, and tip the food vendors well — free concerts run on goodwill and sponsor dollars, and both are easier to keep than to replace. See you on the grass Sunday.
