Addicus and the Case for Loud, Kind Power-Pop

Marquette's indie output tends to run melancholy — all that lake and winter will do that to a songwriter. So it's a relief that one of the town's most visible young bands wants to talk about friendship and mental health at full volume. Addicus — Alexis, Josh, Eric, and Andy — is a Marquette indie/power-pop outfit that spent the spring in an unusual amount of daylight, including an April 29, 2026 appearance on WLUC's "Upper Michigan Today," with a "Concert in the Corner" segment and a live set at Superior Culture that followed on May 1.

Local TV playing a young power-pop band as a feel-good morning segment tells you something about where this band sits: not underground, exactly, but civically beloved — the kind of act a small city adopts. WNMU-FM profiled Addicus back in 2024 as a group centering songs on friendship and mental health, and that framing has stuck because it's true to the music. The hooks are bright and the volume is real, but the subject matter is the stuff people up here don't always say out loud through eight months of winter.

What's striking is how Addicus fits the Marquette model without copying it. This is the same town that produced Liquid Mike's fuzzed-out power-pop and the emo of Charmer — there's clearly something in the water (or the ore) that pushes local bands toward big melodies and short songs. But where Liquid Mike leans wry and Charmer leans wounded, Addicus leans earnest and communal, a band that seems genuinely to like its own members and wants the crowd in on it. In a scene this size, that generosity is a strategy: play the library benefit, play the brewery, play the morning show, say yes to everything, and let the town raise you.

Why it matters: a music scene needs its middle. Everyone celebrates the festival (Hiawatha) and the breakout (Liquid Mike), but the health of a place is really in the bands one rung down — the ones playing Superior Culture and the brewery back rooms, building an audience one all-ages set at a time. Addicus is squarely in that connective tissue, and they're doing it while modeling something the U.P. quietly needs: young men in a rock band openly talking about not being okay.

Catch them at a brewery, a basement, or your local morning-news couch. Bring earplugs and an open heart. Loud and kind is a harder trick than either one alone, and Addicus has been landing it.
