Two Road-Worn Duos, One New Bandshell: The Rough Romance Tour Hits Presque Isle

Some tours are marketing. This one is a friendship that got out of hand. Flagship Romance and The Rough & Tumble — two internationally touring folk-Americana duos who, by their own telling, logged something like 500,000 miles and a combined decade-plus on the road before they ever met — bring their "Rough Romance Tour" to Marquette on Tuesday, Aug. 4, with a 7 p.m. show slated for the Presque Isle bandshell.

If you've never caught either act, the shared bill is a gift, because they're built from the same DNA: four-part harmonies, jokes between songs, hooks that lodge in your skull, and the kind of on-stage rapport you only get from people who've spent too long in vans. The Rough & Tumble in particular have made a career of turning the touring life — the dogs, the trailer, the constant motion — into songs, which lands differently in a summer where Marquette itself just built a better stage to receive traveling musicians.

That's the quiet subtext of this booking. A national folk duo double-bill routing through Presque Isle Park is exactly the kind of date the old, decommissioned bandshell couldn't reliably host. The new Peg Hirvonen shell — dedicated in late June — was pitched partly on being able to bring in touring acts, not just the (excellent, 139-year-old) City Band. An Aug. 4 show by two acts with actual international itineraries is the thesis getting tested in public.

The broader point for the week: this is what a healthy summer looks like. Within a couple of weeks of Hiawatha, the town is still pulling in outside talent instead of coasting on the festival hangover. The audience that turned out for old-time fiddle in Tourist Park is the same audience that'll turn out for harmony-drenched Americana on the point — folk-literate, warm, and large enough to make the drive worth a touring band's while.

Elsewhere this week, keep an eye on the brewery stages — Ore Dock and Blackrocks both keep rolling summer calendars — and mark your own calendar for the Aug. 20 Music on Third downtown. But Tuesday's the anchor. Pack the blanket and the bug spray, get out to Presque Isle before 7, and watch two bands who drove half a million miles to become friends make it look easy. Free-ish, outdoors, on Lake Superior. There are worse Tuesdays.
