First Friday, a No-Cover Pub, and a Wednesday You Already Missed
The best weekend of live music on Maui this week costs, if you plan it right, about the price of parking. It starts Friday on Market Street.
Wailuku First Friday takes over the old plantation-town main drag from 6 to 9 p.m. on August 7, free and family-run, with Maui-made vendors, food and local entertainment filling the sidewalks and the Wailuku Garage. This month's headline draw is a Maui institution that isn't a band at all: Uptown Getdown, the one-on-one breakdancing tournament returning for its 12th year, with DJ Joralien and DJ Dhey on the music, B-Boy Karma hosting, and check-in for competitors at 5:30. It's the rare all-ages street event where the "stage" is a circle of chalk and the crowd is the amplifier. Park free after 6 at the Wailuku Municipal garage off Church Street.
Saturday and Sunday, point the car south. Mulligan's on the Blue in Wailea runs live music across the weekend with no cover — an Irish pub perched over the fairways with an ocean view that does half the work, and a rotating cast of island players who do the rest. It's been one of Maui's steadiest stages since the early 2000s, dependable in the way a good neighborhood bar is dependable: you don't check who's on, you just go.

Why this matters: the healthiest sign in any recovering scene isn't the marquee show, it's the connective tissue — the recurring, low-stakes, no-cover nights where locals actually gather and young performers actually cut their teeth.
