Island Style, Up Close: John Cruz Plays ProArts Tonight

There is a version of "Island Style" playing in a rental car somewhere on this island right now. John Cruz's 1996 song is so woven into Hawai'i's soundtrack — mangoes, ukulele, the drive to grandma's — that it's easy to forget there's a specific, Nā Hōkū Hanohano-winning songwriter behind it, one who's spent thirty years being much more than one beloved tune. Tonight, August 12, he plays it and everything around it in the best small room on Maui.

The show is the John Cruz Island Style Series at the ProArts Playhouse in Kihei, 7:00 p.m., tickets running roughly $32 to $48.
