Bring an Appetite: The Plate Scrapers Take the Jazz Cafe Stage Friday

Here is the thing about a mid-August Friday in the Wyoming Valley: the big rooms are still asleep. The Kirby is dark. Montage is a rumor until the 28th. This Friday, Aug. 14, the River Street Jazz Cafe hands its stage to The Plate Scrapers, 8 p.m. That's the whole marquee, and around here it's enough.

The Jazz Cafe is that increasingly rare thing — a restaurant, a bar and a genuine music venue crammed into one intimate space, run since the early '90s as the region's default answer to "where's the show tonight?" It leans on what its own people proudly call a top-notch sound and lighting system, which in a space this size means you feel the low end in your sternum and can still hear the person next to you order a round. The kitchen keeps it unpretentious: pierogies, sliders, cheesesteak quesadillas — pub food built for a night of standing and hollering, not for the 'gram.

As for the headliners: The Plate Scrapers roll in as a outfit, the kind of act the Jazz Cafe threads into its weekend calendar between the rock nights, the country nights and the tribute bands. If you've been to the room before, you know the drill — the bill says one name, the night delivers a lot more than the name suggests, and by the second set the distinction between "band" and "bar" has quietly dissolved.

Why does a single club date on a random August Friday matter enough to preview? Because right now it is the calendar.
