The Valley Wakes Up: What the Calendar Looks Like the Second This Window Closes
We have spent all summer making the same argument in different clothes: mid-July through mid-August in NEPA belongs to the free Sunday concerts at Nay Aug Park and the clubs that never clock out. The big rooms slept. Montage Mountain sat empty. Peach Fest — the region's old jam-band crown jewel — didn't materialize again in 2026, no confirmed edition, extending a quiet that goes back years. It's been a small, scrappy, wonderful summer.
That's about to end, and fast. Here's the season turning, week by week.
It starts, fittingly, at a club. River Street Jazz Cafe closes out August the way it carried it — with an "Old & In The Way" tribute on Aug. 21 and the Oasis tribute Oas-ish on Aug. 22. The little room in Plains hands the baton to the big ones without missing a beat.
Then the mountain finally wakes up. The first booked 2026 show at The Pavilion at Montage Mountain lands Aug. 28: Berzerkus, with Black Label Society, Lamb of God and Suicidal Tendencies — a full amphitheater's worth of down-tuned catharsis for a valley that has been surviving on pierogies and folk covers for six weeks. After a summer where the 18,000-capacity amphitheater didn't host a single in-window date, that is a genuinely loud reawakening.
The very next night, Aug. 29, downtown Wilkes-Barre gets its flagship back: the F.M. Kirby Center — dark all summer — opens its 2026 concert board with the Traveling Milburys, a Traveling Wilburys tribute. From bloodcore-adjacent thrash on the mountain to Handle-With-Care harmonies on Public Square in under 24 hours. That's the range this region runs, once it decides to run.
And then September confirms the mountain's back for good, with the Goo Goo Dolls at The Pavilion on Sept. 5, followed a few weeks later by Brad Paisley at the Mohegan Arena on Sept. 24 — the arena's next concert after its own long summer nap. Late August into September is when NEPA's paper capacity — tens of thousands of seats across Montage, the Kirby and the Mohegan — finally gets switched back on.
Here's the why-it-matters, and it's not just a schedule flip. This is the region showing you its whole musical body in the space of about three weeks: metal on a mountainside, a tribute band in a restored movie palace, alt-radio royalty and country arena-fillers, all of it within a short drive of the same downtowns. The summer taught you that NEPA's live scene has a resilient, DIY floor — free parks and stubborn clubs that keep the lights on when nobody's touring. The fall is about to show you the ceiling.
So enjoy this last quiet weekend. Catch Brass Storm at Nay Aug on Sunday, the free series' faithful send-off into the busy season. Get one more cheesesteak quesadilla at the Jazz Cafe. Then check your bank balance and your calendar, because starting Aug. 21 the bills come due — the good kind. The valley has been holding its breath since the Fourth of July. It's about to let it all out at once.
