A Century of Showbiz: Jack White Plays a Room That's Seen It All
On Saturday, July 18, Jack White brings "Jack White Live 2026" to College Street Music Hall, 8 p.m., and it's the kind of booking the building was practically designed for — a restless rock auteur, all raw guitar and blown-fuse volume, in a room that has spent a hundred years learning how to hold a crowd.
Because here's what a lot of ticketholders won't know as they file in: this room is 100 years old this year. It opened in 1926 as the Roger Sherman Theatre, a movie-and-vaudeville palace from the era when a night out meant a marquee and a chandelier. It hosted New Haven's premiere of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid — with Paul Newman and Robert Redford in attendance, which is about as good a piece of local trivia as this city owns. It ran as the Palace Theatre from 1984 to 2002, went dark, and came roaring back in 2015 as the concert hall we know now: up to 2,000 capacity, floor and balcony and seats, the marquee mid-size room in the city.
White is a fitting tenant for a place with that much history in its plaster. He's a man obsessed with the old ways — analog tape, live-to-the-room energy, the physical fact of a guitar being too loud — and he tends to treat a stage like a high-wire act, no setlist safe, no song played the same way twice. A performer that combustible in a room with this much muscle memory is a genuinely great matchup.
And it's not a one-off. The summer at College Street reads like a statement of intent: Band of Horses with Dinosaur Jr. already came through on July 11, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band with Hayes Carll land July 22, and Franz Ferdinand arrive Aug 7 on their "Greater Glasgow Cultural Exchange" run. That's four wildly different flavors of headliner in under a month, all cross-confirmed across multiple ticketing platforms, all in the same 2,000-cap room. It's the clearest evidence you'll find that New Haven is a real tour stop, not a maybe.
So when the lights go down Saturday and White kicks into whatever he decides to open with — and good luck predicting it — take a half-second to look up at the ceiling. A hundred years of New Haven nights are up there. He's just the latest to make the place shake.
