This Weekend: Band of Horses, Dinosaur Jr., and Thirty Bands in a Brewery
Some weekends you have to make hard choices. This is one of them, and I'm sorry, and also I'm not, because a schedule this crowded is exactly what a good summer is supposed to feel like.
Start tonight. Thursday, July 9, Lettuce brings its funk-soul-jazz churn to New England Brewing Co. on the Branford campus, 6 p.m. an outdoor, beer-in-hand set from a band that treats a groove like something you build brick by brick until the whole thing levitates. It's the ideal warmup for the main event two days later.
Because Saturday is the headline. Band of Horses with Dinosaur Jr., billed as "An Evening With…," at College Street Music Hall, 8 p.m. This is a co-bill that reads like a mixtape someone made you in a very good year: Ben Bridwell's wide-screen, canyon-sized choruses on one side, J Mascis's gloriously overdriven wall of guitar on the other. "An Evening With" means no distractions and no early exit — just two bands who know exactly what they are, in a 2,000-cap room built to hold that kind of volume. If you buy one ticket this weekend, buy this one.
But if your Saturday runs on daylight and dollar-friendly, point the car toward Branford instead. The Shoreline Summer Festival takes over Armada Brewing from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., roughly 30 bands across two stages, an eleven-hour marathon of local and regional acts that's less a concert than a full day's residency. Bring sunscreen, pace your flights, and treat the lineup like a buffet — the whole point is discovery.
Here's the honest calculus: the Band of Horses show is the event, the one you'll be talking about in October. But the Shoreline festival is the scene, the churn of working bands that keeps a music city actually musical. My advice? Spend the afternoon at Armada, drift out before the sun drops, and get to College Street with time to spare. Greedy? Sure. But that's what shoulder-season summer in a small city is for — the rooms are close, the nights are long, and nobody's checking whether you did both.
Either way, don't sit home. This is the kind of weekend that makes people move to a city like ours and then insist, to anyone who'll listen, that they'd never leave.
