This Weekend: Franz Ferdinand, La India, and a City That Can't Sit Still

If last month's calendar was crowded, this weekend's is a genuine traffic jam — indoors, outdoors, ticketed, free, uptown, downtown. Here's how to survive it without missing the good part, whichever good part is yours.

Friday, Aug 7 is the pivot point, and you'll have to choose. Indoors, at College Street Music Hall, 8 p.m., Franz Ferdinand arrive on their "Greater Glasgow Cultural Exchange" tour — twenty-plus years on and still the tightest, most danceable art-rock band Scotland ever exported, the kind of live act that turns a 2,000-cap room into one enormous nervous system reacting to the same downbeat. Meanwhile up in Hamden, Space Ballroom hosts Kill Bill: The Rapper the same night, a very different, sweatier proposition for the 300-cap faithful.

Or go outside and go free. The New Haven Puerto Rican Festival opens Friday on the New Haven Green with Lisette Melendez at 6 p.m., and it's the pregame to the weekend's biggest free draw: Saturday, Aug 8, salsa legend La India headlines the Green. "La Princesa de la Salsa" commanding a downtown crowd of thousands, at no cost, is arguably the single most essential ticket-that-isn't-a-ticket of the entire summer. Get there early; you will not be the only one with this idea.

And for the crate-diggers, Saturday also brings Best Music Fest at Best Video in Hamden — 10 local acts in one room, the DIY scene's annual show of strength, and the best possible antidote to a weekend otherwise dominated by names you already knew.

So how do you play it? If you're a completist with stamina: Franz Ferdinand Friday night, sleep in, then the Green for La India as the sun drops Saturday, with Best Music Fest as a Saturday-afternoon warmup if your legs hold. If you're broke and brilliant: two nights on the Green plus the video store, total cost roughly zero, memories roughly priceless. There's no wrong answer here — there's only the wrong choice, which is staying home.

This is the weekend the summer's been building toward: a Scottish dance-rock institution and a salsa queen headlining the same 48 hours, a few miles and one very manageable decision apart. New Haven doesn't always get weekends this stacked. Don't waste it.
