After Chain Reaction: Where Does All-Ages OC Punk Go Now?
Seven months ago, on the weekend of December 18–19, 2025, Anaheim's Chain Reaction played its last shows and shut the door on nearly 30 years of all-ages punk. Movements and Militarie Gun headlined the send-off; the room at 1652 W. Lincoln Ave. went dark. As the summer touring season peaks, the hole it left is impossible to miss — so this week we went looking for what fills it.
First, honor the loss honestly. In its farewell statement, the venue wrote that "for almost 30 years, Chain Reaction has proudly fostered the alt-music scene by creating a space for a community that the outside world 'just didn't get,'" adding that the decision to close "wasn't made quickly. We wrestled with it and have ultimately made the decision to close our doors." The tributes came fast. Touché Amoré posted that "that room gave space for us and so many of our peers to grow and we're indebted to all the things that made it what it was." Those are real words from real bands about a real room, and they matter, because Chain Reaction was where a 16-year-old with no ID and no car could still see a band that would later sell out theaters.
Here's the uncomfortable math: an all-ages, no-bar venue is a hard business. The economics that killed Chain Reaction — rent, insurance, thin margins on kids who can't buy drinks — haven't changed. What's left in Orange County is a patchwork. Record stores like Fullerton's Programme Skate & Sound keep the flame with free counter shows. The Constellation Room at the Observatory runs many dates as all-ages, giving under-21 fans a foot in the door of a real touring circuit. And the DIY house-and-warehouse network does what it has always done: exist quietly, move often, and refuse to be documented.
The lesson OC keeps having to relearn is that a scene is a verb. The bands that made this county famous — the ska kids, the pop-punk kids, the hardcore kids — didn't come from a building. They came from teenagers who needed somewhere to go and built it. Chain Reaction is gone. The need is not. Watch the record-store flyers, watch the Constellation calendar, and when a 15-year-old band books a Tuesday night nobody's coming to, go anyway.
