Fair Week Turns Up Loud: Cypress Hill, Nile Rodgers, and Nelly on the Pacific

The OC Fair is fully open, the fried Oreos are flowing, and the Pacific Amphitheatre is about to run one of its loudest weeks of the summer. Three nights, three eras, one Costa Mesa bowl. Here's your itinerary.

Wednesday, July 29 — Cypress Hill with Ozomatli. The rap game's most famously smoke-forward duo-turned-institution brings decades of "Insane in the Brain" muscle to the fairgrounds, with L.A.'s genre-melting Ozomatli opening — a Latin-funk-hip-hop collective that has never met a groove it couldn't stretch. It is, on paper and on stage, the most kinetic bill of Fair week. Neither act is local, but both are Southern California to the bone, and the Pacific is the kind of open-air room where their sound gets to breathe.

Friday, July 31 — Nile Rodgers & Chic with Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. If you want to understand how many songs one person can be responsible for, spend an evening with Nile Rodgers. The Chic mastermind and super-producer behind a catalog that runs from "Le Freak" to "Get Lucky" turns his set into a rolling history of the last 50 years of pop, and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe — a SoCal jam-and-soul staple — is a genuinely great fit for the warm-up.

Sunday, August 2 — Nelly with Too $hort. Turn-of-the-century radio, unbothered and undefeated. Nelly still has "Hot in Herre" and "Ride Wit Me" in the chamber, and Bay Area legend Too $hort brings four decades of West Coast rap gravity as the co-headliner.

The through-line, as always, is the deal: every one of these Pacific Amphitheatre tickets includes same-day OC Fair admission, so the price of the show is also the price of the whole midway. The Summer Concert Series runs through August 16, and this is the week it hits full volume. Pace yourself, hydrate, and remember the funnel cake is not going anywhere.
