On the Ocean: Thompson's Point Is Portland's Best Summer Argument

Every city has that one place that only makes sense for three months a year and then makes the other nine worth enduring. In Portland, that place is Thompson's Point — 10 Thompson's Point Rd, a redeveloped district jutting into the Fore River, where somebody had the good sense to point a stage at the water and let summer do the rest.

The setup is deceptively simple: an outdoor waterfront concert grounds, a June-through-September season, and sightlines that end in tidal marsh instead of a parking garage. But "simple" undersells the scale. The marquee nights out here are genuinely big — the room can swell past 6,500 people, which is arena math happening in the open air with a breeze off the Fore. It is, full stop, Portland's premier warm-weather concert setting, booked by the State Theatre and Waterfront Concerts partners who run so much of what you hear in this town.

The season ahead makes the case better than I can. In the back half of July alone the Point hosts Djo — yes, Joe Keery's music project — on Jul 21, Shakey Graves with Dope Lemon on Jul 25, and Trampled By Turtles bringing Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners on Jul 26. Then August turns into a genuine event: The Head and the Heart with Houndmouth (Aug 2), a certain sold-out hometown homecoming we are contractually obligated not to spoil twice (early August), and the two-night Lake Street Dive stand with Couch to close the window on Aug 15 and 16.

And then there's the ritual that makes this place feel less like a venue and more like a family reunion: "Guster On The Ocean," the annual two-night hometown gathering — this year Aug 8 and 9. Guster formed in Boston, technically, but the band's Maine ties run deep enough that the Point has become their unofficial summer living room. When a New England institution picks your waterfront for its yearly homecoming, you're doing something right.

The knock on outdoor shows is always the same — weather, sound bleed, the schlep. The Point mostly answers it. The schlep is short (it's minutes from downtown), the sound holds up over water better than you'd fear, and the weather is part of the deal: you came to see a band with the harbor light going pink behind them, and that's not a bug. Bring a layer, because the same river that gives you the view will remind you it's still Maine after sundown.

Nine months of the year, Thompson's Point is a bunch of buildings by the tracks. For the other three, it's the best seat in the state. Get out there before the season turns.
