Weekend Preview: Billy Strings Takes the Arena, and the Point Doesn't Blink
Some weekends you plan around. This is one of them — a three-day stretch where the biggest bluegrass story in the country parks downtown and the waterfront answers with two of its own. Clear the calendar; here's the plan.
The headline: Billy Strings, two SOLD-OUT nights at Cross Insurance Arena, Fri Jul 24 and Sat Jul 25. Sit with that for a second. Cross Insurance Arena holds north of 6,700 in concert mode — it's where the arena-scale tours land when they outgrow every club in town — and Billy Strings has sold it out twice, back to back, with a flat-top acoustic guitar and no drummer. That is not normal. Bluegrass filling Portland's biggest downtown room on consecutive nights is the kind of thing that would've sounded like a typo ten years ago. If you've got a ticket, you already know. If you don't, you're not getting in, so live vicariously and be happy this town can pull it off at all.
Saturday's outdoor alternative: Shakey Graves + Dope Lemon at Thompson's Point, Jul 25. For everyone shut out of the arena — or anyone who'd rather trade a concourse for the Fore River at dusk — this is the move. Shakey Graves' one-man-band-gone-full-band evolution pairs weirdly well with Dope Lemon's hazy Australian psych-groove, and the Point's waterfront setting is built for exactly this kind of golden-hour double bill. Bring a layer; the river turns on you after dark.
Sunday's cooldown: Trampled By Turtles with Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners at Thompson's Point, Jul 26. If Billy Strings whets your appetite for fast fingers and no drum kit, Trampled By Turtles is the perfect Sunday chaser — a Duluth string band that can go from whisper to blur inside a single song. Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners open with the kind of indie-folk that's made for a crowd sprawled on the grass. It's the gentlest possible landing after a loud weekend.
The throughline here is worth naming: three shows, three variations on strings-first American roots music, and a city big enough to host all of them in the same 72 hours without the calendar breaking a sweat. That's not a fluke. That's a scene.
Plan of attack: if you're arena-bound, get downtown early and eat before you go — concourse pricing is its own kind of headliner. If you're Point-bound either day, layer up, get there for the openers (Dope Lemon and Richy Mitch both earn it), and stake out grass with a water view.
