Weekend Preview: Lake Street Dive Closes the Waterfront Season, Twice

We open this window on the last big weekend of the stretch the way we should — out on the ocean, with a band built for exactly this room. Lake Street Dive plays two nights at Thompson's Point, Sat Aug 15 and Sun Aug 16, with Couch opening both. If you only get outside once more before the season turns, make it this.

Here's the pitch for the uninitiated: Lake Street Dive is a New England-bred band (their story starts up at a New England conservatory) that plays a kind of retro-soul-meets-pop with a genuinely staggering singer out front and a stand-up bass holding it all down. It's music with swing and daylight in it — precisely the thing you want when the stage is pointed at the Fore River and the harbor light is going pink behind the drummer. A two-night stand means they can stretch, dig into deep cuts on one night and hits on the other, and reward anyone who commits to both. Openers Couch — a horn-forward pop outfit with a similar sunny, brass-lit energy — are a smart pairing, not a warm-up to endure.

The setting is the co-headliner. Thompson's Point (10 Thompson's Point Rd) is Portland's premier warm-weather room, an outdoor waterfront grounds that's been running acts all season, and this is the kind of golden-hour, feel-good, dance-in-the-grass show it was practically designed to host. Standard Point advice applies and I will die repeating it: get there for the opener, and bring a layer, because the same river giving you the view will remind you after sundown that this is still Maine in August.

If you want to make a full weekend of it, the rest of the window obliges. Over at Cross Insurance Arena, Brandi Carlile brings "The Human Tour" downtown on Aug 13 — a genuine force-of-nature vocalist in the arena-scale room. The State Theatre counters with rising country songwriter Waylon Wyatt on Aug 12 and, in a hard left turn, comedian Pete Holmes on Aug 14. And the small rooms don't clock out: SPACE stacks a four-band local bill (Biz Turkey, Honey Radar, Gum Parker, Phantom Buffalo) on Aug 15, while Portland House of Music and Events hosts Bayker Blankenship the same night. Whatever your volume preference, the calendar's got a dial for it.

But the weekend belongs to the water. Two nights of Lake Street Dive with the Fore River as a backdrop is the correct way to send off the marquee stretch of Portland's summer — communal, sun-warmed, and just a little bittersweet, because you can feel the season starting to lean toward fall.

Plan of attack: Point both nights if your wallet allows; if you're picking one, Saturday's the party and Sunday's the deep cut. Either way — grass, water view, jacket in the bag. See you out there before the tide takes summer with it.
