A Field Guide to the Shoals' Live-Music Rooms
Somewhere along a two-mile stretch of the Tennessee River, a handful of small towns learned how to make records that outlived everybody who cut them. That's the burden and the blessing of playing music in the Shoals: you are always, on some level, standing where the Swampers stood. But you can't drink a beer inside a legend, and you can't two-step in a museum. So here's a working field guide to the rooms where the amps are actually plugged in tonight — Florence to Tuscumbia, dive to velvet seat.
FloBama Restaurant & Music Hall (311 N. Court St, Florence) is the beating heart, and it knows it. This is the busiest room in the area, running something close to nightly with a dinner set around 6:30 and a late set near 10. The menu leans Southern rock, country, and blues, which is to say it books what the Shoals actually wants on a Friday. Regulars clock the rhythms of the place: the weekly FloBama Sessions on Mondays, and the annual Karaoke Idol, where local nerve gets tested in public. Come hungry and stay past the entrée.
Four doors down the block, On The Rocks (110 N. Court St) is the UNA-crowd bar — covers and acoustic sets, cheap and loud and young, the kind of place where a guy with one guitar and a looping pedal can hold a room that's mostly there to see each other.
Turn onto East Mobile Street and the register changes entirely. 116 E. Mobile (116 E. Mobile St) is the gritty DIY room, the local hub for touring indie, alt, and punk — the one venue in town where the band on stage might be sleeping on somebody's floor and might, in three years, be on a festival poster. Right beside it, Wildwood Tavern (108 E. Mobile St) flies the "Keep Florence Funky" flag without irony — funk, rock, and blues in a proper dive, where the sound of the band and the sound of the crowd meet somewhere in the middle of the room.
Singin' River Brewing Co. (526 E. College St) has quietly become the grown-up's night out. The Singin' River LIVE series runs 7 to 11, Americana and Southern rock and jam-leaning acts, and it's the room punching above its weight on the touring circuit — the place mid-level names route through when they want the Shoals but not a barn.
For a seated evening with the lights down, the Shoals Theatre (123 N. Seminary St) is the room. A restored downtown movie palace from the, it does Americana concerts and community theatre from actual chairs, with the kind of hush a great songwriter deserves.
Cross the river toward Cox Creek and you hit Swampers Bar & Grille, inside the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa (800 Cox Creek Pkwy). Yes, it's named for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section — the "Swampers" that "Sweet Home Alabama" name-checked and made immortal. It's a hotel bar, but a riverside one, with soul, blues, and Southern rock and a view that forgives the room service prices.
Down in Muscle Shoals and Sheffield, Champy's Chicken (120 E. 2nd St, plus a Sheffield location) does exactly what a juke joint should: fried chicken and live blues under one greasy, glorious roof. And out in Tuscumbia, the Rattlesnake Saloon (1292 Mount Mills Rd) sits under a natural sandstone overhang and shuttles you down by "saloon taxi" — but that's a whole story for another week.
Now, the two addresses everybody wants on this list and shouldn't quite get: FAME Studios (603 E. Avalon Ave, Muscle Shoals) and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio (3614 Jackson Hwy, Sheffield). FAME is a working studio that runs daily tours; the Jackson Highway room is a museum and tour site now. These are cathedrals, and you should absolutely make the pilgrimage — but they are not nightclubs, and pretending otherwise does them a disservice. The magic there is recorded, not gigged.
That's the map. The genius of the Shoals is that it's small enough to catch a DIY punk band and a brewery Americana set on the same night, close enough to walk between half these rooms, and proud enough to name its nicest bar after the session guys. Go stand where they stood. Then go somewhere the amp's still on.
