The Handy Hangover Cure: FloBama Carries August (and SkyDog Is Coming)
There is a particular quiet that settles over the Shoals the week after the W.C. Handy Music Festival packs up — 12 days and 200 events will do that to a region's nervous system. You would forgive the whole scene for lying down in a dark room until October. It is not going to. As is tradition, 311 N. Court Street picks up the slack, because FloBama does not really believe in off-nights.
Start tonight. Thursday, August 6, the Chad Bradford Band takes the FloBama stage at 6:30pm — a proper "we survived Handy" reentry show. Friday the 7th, the Shoal Nuff Band plays at 7pm, and honestly there is no more Shoals-coded band name in existence; if you were going to invent a local group for a movie set here, that is the name you would land on. Then Saturday the 8th is a doubleheader: Southern Breeze at 6:30 and the Tyler Jones Band bringing it home at 10pm. That is the FloBama model in a single weekend — early-evening, family-friendly, roll straight into a late set — and it is the reason this room is the busiest in town, near-nightly, Monday "FloBama Sessions" and all.
This matters more than a typical August calendar because of what FloBama actually is in the Shoals ecosystem. Festivals are events; a room like this is infrastructure. When the visitors go home and the plazas go quiet, the scene needs somewhere that keeps the amps warm and the local bands working. FloBama is that somewhere, the same way Singin' River Brewing over on East College and Swampers at the Marriott keep the lights on between the marquee weekends. The Swampers name, of course, is a nod to the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section — because even the bar and grille around here has a rhythm-section pedigree.
On the horizon, the reason to keep your calendar open: "SkyDog: The Shoals Experience," coming August 28–30. The SkyDog name is a direct salute to Duane Allman — "Skydog" himself — who cut some of his most legendary session work right here at FAME on Avalon Avenue before the Allman Brothers took him national. Details are still firming up, but a late-August event built around that lineage, in the town where Duane actually did the work, is exactly the kind of thing this region should be doing. Keep an eye on FAME's channels.
And then, glimmering out there in October like the light at the end of a very long tunnel: ShoalsFest, October 3–4 at McFarland Park, right on the Tennessee River, curated once again by native son Jason Isbell. The lineup is a gut-punch in the best way — Isbell and the 400 Unit both nights, the Drive-By Truckers performing "Decoration Day" in full with Isbell on Saturday, S.G. Goodman that same day, and a Sunday that hands you Jeff Tweedy solo and Willow Avalon. That is a festival worth the wait, and it is the bookend to a Shoals year that opened its summer with Handy and will close its fall on the riverbank.
So no, the scene is not lying down in a dark room. It is at FloBama tonight, watching the Chad Bradford Band, saving a little energy for SkyDog, and counting the weeks to the river. The Handy Festival gave the Shoals its 200 events. The rest of the calendar is the town proving, one 6:30 set at a time, that it never actually needed a festival to keep the music going.
