Here's a genuine Shoals dilemma for you this Friday, the kind that only exists in a town small enough to walk across and stubborn enough to keep two very different scenes alive at once. On July 10, you can spend your evening on a brewery patio with a pint and some rootsy songcraft, or you can spend it in a dark DIY room letting a couple of loud bands rearrange your sternum. Same night. Same town. Roughly a ten-minute drive apart. Choose your fighter.

Door number one: The Ransom Brothers at Singin' River Brewing Co. (526 E. College St), 7 to 11 p.m., as part of the brewery's Singin' River LIVE series. This is the civilized option, and I mean that as a compliment. Singin' River has turned its stage into one of the more reliable Americana-and-Southern-rock rooms in the area, the sort of place where the songs get room to breathe and nobody's mad if you actually want to hear the words. Four solid hours, cold beer made on premises, and a band whose whole deal is built on getting a room to lean in. If your Friday-night dream involves a table, a flight, and a chorus you can hum on the way out, this is your church.

Door number two: New Madrid and Cold Cold Sweats at 116 E. Mobile (116 E. Mobile St). This is the other thing entirely. 116 is the Shoals' scrappy indie-alt-punk clubhouse, the room that has always understood that some music needs a low ceiling and a sticky floor to work right. New Madrid brings the kind of psych-tinged indie that rewards standing close to the stage; Cold Cold Sweats bring, if the name is any promise at all, exactly the sweat the name advertises. This is the show for people who like their Friday nights a little unpredictable and a lot louder.

What I love about this particular Friday is that it's a clean X-ray of the whole scene. The Shoals contains multitudes: it's the birthplace of some of the most polished, session-perfect records ever cut, and it's also a place where a DIY band can pull a crowd on a Tuesday. Both of those things are real, and on July 10 they're both open for business within the same city limits. You don't have to pick a side philosophically. You only have to pick one physically, because — and I've done the math — you cannot be in both rooms at once no matter how fast you drive Court Street.

My honest advice? Read your own week. If you've been grinding and you want a beer, a seat, and songs that treat you like an adult, point the car at Singin' River and let The Ransom Brothers run out the clock to 11. If you've been bored, or restless, or you just need to be reminded that live music can still surprise you, go stand in front of the stage at 116 and let New Madrid and Cold Cold Sweats do their worst. There is no wrong answer. There's barely even a bad one.

And if you're the ambitious type — catch an early set on the brewery patio, then bolt across town to close the night out in the loud room. It's the Shoals. It's small on purpose. Use that.

Either way, tip your bartender, thank the band, and remember that both of these rooms staying open is the actual point. A town this size doesn't get to keep two scenes this different unless people keep showing up. So show up.
