Weekend Preview: Lucero at the Black Sheep Anchors a Loaded Friday
Some Fridays you pick a show. This July 17, you pick a lane. Colorado Springs has stacked three genuinely good touring acts across three very different rooms on a single night, and the only wrong move is staying home.
Start where the sweat is. Lucero — Memphis's patron saints of whiskey-throated, punk-raised country-soul — headline the Black Sheep, and there is no better room in the city to hear Ben Nichols rasp through a barroom singalong than a packed, standing-room East Side club where the back wall is close enough to lean on. This is the platonic Black Sheep booking: a band with a devoted cult, a catalog built for shouting along, and zero interest in a seated theater.
If your tastes run to the plainspoken and literary, drive north to Phil Long Music Hall at Bourbon Brothers, where Ashley McBryde brings her hard-won, sharply written brand of modern country to a seated room that flatters a voice like hers.
And for the string-band faithful, Old Crow Medicine Show takes the Pikes Peak Center downtown — the big-room option of the night, and the one where "Wagon Wheel" will detonate on cue. It's the arena-tier ticket in a weekend otherwise defined by clubs.
Why the pileup matters: nights like this are the tell that Colorado Springs has crossed from a market routers skip to a market routers fight over. Three bookers, three rooms, one Friday — that's competition, and competition is how a scene levels up.
Don't sleep on Saturday, either. Save Ferris — yes, the ska-pop "Come On Eileen" crew fronted by Monique Powell — bounces into the Black Sheep on July 18, turning the same room into a horn-blasting, checkerboard-Vans dance party barely 24 hours after Lucero wrung it out. Two nights, two entirely different congregations, same sticky floor.
Pace yourself, hydrate at altitude, and buy the Lucero ticket before Thursday — that one moves. The Black Sheep has been selling out its cult bookings all summer, and Memphis soul at 6,000 feet is exactly the kind of thing this town shows up for.
