Where to Point Your Car When the Lakes Turn Into a Stage
Somewhere between the wineries and the waterfalls, the Finger Lakes quietly turned into one of the better summer music runs in the Northeast, and most people who live here still talk about it like it's a secret. It is not a secret. It is a lakeside amphitheater, a barnstorming folk festival, a century-old opera house, a vineyard stage hanging over Keuka, and a casino showroom, all within about an hour of each other. Here is the field guide, because the season is already loud.
Start with the anchor. Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center — CMAC to everyone — is the lakeside amphitheater in Canandaigua, and in 2026 it is once again the region's biggest draw, running touring acts from June into late August. NYS Music's season preview lists a full summer slate: Death Cab for Cutie with Japanese Breakfast on July 18, Caamp on July 21, Alison Krauss & Union Station on July 25, and a '90s-rock double bill of Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms on August 9. It is the room where the Finger Lakes goes to see a headliner.
An hour south, the terrain changes and so does the volume. Point of the Bluff Vineyards in Hammondsport runs an outdoor concert series on a stage overlooking Keuka Lake — the closest thing the region has to a boutique festival that resets every weekend. The Smith (Smith Opera House) in Geneva is the opposite energy: an 1894 hall with plaster and history, booking Cat Power on July 29. In Ithaca, the State Theatre of Ithaca and the Hangar Theatre split the college-town load, one a restored 1928 movie palace, the other a converted airport hangar out on Route 89. And del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo runs The Vine, a showroom that lands the occasional genuine surprise — more on that in August.
Then there's the reason a lot of us learned the word "Trumansburg" in the first place. The Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance takes over the T-burg fairgrounds July 16–19 for its 34th year, four days and four stages of folk, zydeco, world, and jam. It is the emotional center of the regional summer, and it is founded and hosted by a band from right up the road.
Why does any of this matter beyond the ticket you're about to buy? Because a scene with this much geographic spread usually cannibalizes itself — everybody chasing the same Saturday. The Finger Lakes mostly doesn't. The amphitheater, the wineries, the opera house, and the festival have carved out lanes, and the result is that on a given July weekend you can genuinely choose your own volume. Bring a sweater; the lake wind turns after dark.
