Turnover Opens the Summer at the Arcata Theatre Lounge

Of all the ways to start a Humboldt music summer, a Monday-night dream-pop show at a 1938 movie palace is a very Arcata choice. Tonight, July 6, Virginia's Turnover headlines the Arcata Theatre Lounge with She's Green and Narrow Head in support. Doors and set times run the usual ATL Monday clip; advance tickets were listed around $35, $40 at the door.

Turnover are an interesting fit for a room like this. They arrived a decade ago as a pop-punk band and have spent the years since sanding themselves into something dreamier and jazzier — all reverb-washed guitars and unhurried grooves. It's music built for a big, dark, high-ceilinged space, which is exactly what the ATL is: a former single-screen theater that Arcata refused to let die, reborn as a concert hall that still shows films between the touring nights.

That's the real story of tonight — not the band so much as the building. Small markets lose their historic rooms constantly; the economics are brutal and the deferred maintenance is worse. The ATL survived because the town treated it as infrastructure, not nostalgia. A national indie act routing through on a Monday in July, on a bill deep enough to need three names, is what a functioning small-market venue looks like when it works.

Narrow Head, the Texas heavy-shoegaze outfit, is the wild card here — louder and more caustic than the headliner, the kind of undercard that sends half the room to the bar and pins the other half to the rail. She's Green bring the woozier, more melodic end. It's a well-sequenced night, which is its own small art.

If you're new to town — and in a college county in July, a lot of you are — this is a low-stakes way to learn the flagship room. Get there early enough to actually look at the place. The marquee alone is worth the walk.
