Fiddles, Gospel, and a Free Street Party: Rooftop Returns Friday

Friday, July 24 is a state holiday in Utah — Pioneer Day — which means fireworks, parades, and a valley in a celebratory mood. It's also the night the Rooftop Concert Series brings its July date to Nu Skin Plaza, and the organizers booked the room to match: a big, warm, Utah-to-its-bones bill, free at Center Street and 100 West.

The lineup pairs The Lower Lights, the rotating Utah gospel-and-Americana collective that turns hymns into goosebump singalongs, with Ryan Shupe & The RubberBand, the veteran "rocking newgrass" outfit led by a fifth-generation fiddle player, and singer-songwriter Susie Brown. Music starts at 7 p.m.; admission is free.

On paper it's a curveball. Rooftop's reputation, old and new, leans indie — the reboot opened in May with I Don't Know How But They Found Me and Sego. A Pioneer Day bill anchored by gospel harmonies and a fiddle band is a different animal, and a smart one. This is the night the series stops being a hip downtown thing and becomes a whole-valley thing, the sort of show a grandmother and a skate kid can both love without either one pretending.

That's the quiet genius of a free show on the state's most heavily attended holiday: no cover means no gatekeeping, and a Utah-roots bill means the audience that shows up for the parade stays for the music. For a series in year one of its comeback, converting Pioneer Day foot traffic into Rooftop regulars is worth more than any headliner.
