Saturday at Velour: Four Bands, No Bar, All Ages

The most Provo thing you can do on a Saturday night is stand in a velvet-lined room with no liquor license and watch four bands you've never heard of play like their lives depend on it. On Saturday, July 25, Velour Live Music Gallery does exactly that — a four-band local bill, doors and music in the 7:30 p.m. range, all ages, the way this room has done it since 2006.

The bill, per the Daily Herald's Utah Valley Living listings for the week, brings Back By Sundown, Yarrow, Junk Drawer and Cool/Hat to 135 N. University Ave.

If those names don't ring a bell, that's the point. Velour is where you go to hear the band before the band. This is the room that ran a Battle of the Bands twice a year and produced Neon Trees, Imagine Dragons, The Aces and The Backseat Lovers from the ranks of exactly these kinds of unknowns. Owner Corey Fox has spent 20 years betting that the 18-year-old opening at 7:30 is worth your full attention, and the alumni wall suggests he's not often wrong.

What you get at a night like this is the actual mechanism of a music scene, visible in real time. Four bands, four little fan bases in the crowd, everybody watching everybody else's set because there's no bar to disappear into. That's how a scene teaches itself — songwriters stealing ideas off the band that went on before them, drummers poaching each other's fills, a room full of teenagers deciding collectively what Provo sounds like this year.

The stakes are lower than a Rooftop crowd of thousands and somehow higher: no free-holiday goodwill, no marquee names, just whether the songs are good enough to hold a room that came to listen. Ten bucks-ish, no wristband, and a real chance you'll be able to say you saw them first.
