Twenty Years of Velour: The Little Room That Keeps Making Stars

Do the math on a converted downtown storefront in a town most of the industry couldn't find on a map, and it shouldn't add up. And yet: Velour Live Music Gallery turned 20 this year, and the list of bands that started on its stage reads like a decade of alt-radio playlists. Neon Trees. Imagine Dragons. The Aces. The Moth & The Flame. Fictionist. The Backseat Lovers. The National Parks. Joshua James. That is not a scene's greatest-hits list. That is one room's.

Owner Corey Fox opened Velour in 2006 at 135 N. University Ave. after two decades promoting and managing bands across the Utah and Salt Lake valleys. He built it on a contrarian premise — all-ages, no alcohol, listening-room quiet — and a twice-a-year Battle of the Bands that functioned as an accidental farm system. Past winners include Neon Trees, Imagine Dragons, The Aces and The Backseat Lovers, which is an absurd hit rate for a local competition whose prize is studio time. By Fox's own count, six Utah bands have signed to major labels off that stage over a 15-year span.

The affection runs both ways. In one widely reported moment, Imagine Dragons and Zions Bank surprised Fox by paying off the venue's mortgage — the alumni protecting the incubator that made them. This year the Salt Lake Tribune marked the 20th anniversary with a look back at the room "where Imagine Dragons started."

Why this matters beyond nostalgia: an all-ages room in a college town is the least glamorous, most fragile institution in live music, and it's also where scenes are actually born. Bars filter for 21-plus; Velour filters for whether you can write a song at 16. That's why the pipeline never dries up — every fall a new class of BYU-and-beyond kids ages into the same stage that made the last ones famous.

Twenty years in, the trophy case is full and the door is still open to whoever's playing at 7:30. Most cities would kill for one Velour. Provo just quietly kept its running.
