Run It Back: The Rooftop Concert Series Returns to Downtown Provo

For six years, the best free show in Provo existed mostly in memory — the one where a few thousand people stood in the street off Center and watched a band play against the sunset. In 2026, the memory got a reboot. The Rooftop Concert Series returned, and the season's already deep enough that you can stop treating it as nostalgia and start treating it as the calendar's spine.

The comeback was reported in January by the Daily Herald, when Provo Mayor Marsha Judkins confirmed the series would come back after its hiatus. Co-founders Sarah Wiley, Mindy Gledhill and Justin Hackworth — the crew behind the original 2010-era run — brought it back in partnership with the city. In April, organizers set the launch and the bill: the rebooted series opened Friday, May 15 at Nu Skin Plaza, with returning Rooftop favorites I Don't Know How But They Found Me, Sego and Pinguin Mofex. Music at 7 p.m. Admission free.

The 2026 schedule runs monthly warm-weather dates — May 15, June 26, July 24, Aug. 21 and Sept. 18 — which means two of them (the July date, and just past our window's edge, the August one) sit squarely in high summer. The format hasn't changed much: local and regional acts on an outdoor downtown stage, families on blankets, the kind of crowd that actually sings along.

Here's why the return is a bigger deal than a nice night out. Provo's scene has a structural problem: it makes stars — Velour's alumni roster is proof — and then loses them to Los Angeles and Nashville. What it has historically lacked is a large, free, everybody's-invited gathering that ties the whole valley together and reminds a Grammy-bound teenager why they started. Rooftop is that connective tissue. A ticketed club builds a fan base one wristband at a time; a free plaza show builds a hometown.

The test now is longevity. One triumphant reboot summer is easy; year three, when the novelty's gone and the sponsorship math gets real, is the hard part. Provo has done this before, and let it lapse before. Show up so they don't have to ask twice.
